She thought she could leave him, and show him, and get him to change his act, but it didn't work. She can't "turn him around."Now, he's got her in a "stranglehold", meaning her little attempt to put him in his place didn't work and he's in control of the relationship. Nobody got raped or beaten. He doesn't literally strangle her or crush her face.
