He said it was a northern style but he really didn't do many style-defining techniques. There are so many systems between southern and northern that unless you study the specific style and know it well, you would not be able to distinguish styles. Those depictions of Japanese Karate in movies like this are inaccurate being that the time of focus of the movie, Karate was just being introduced to Japan by Okinawans. It was not a Japanese art yet, but practiced by a small population of Japan.

They purposely blurred the style... other than saying it's from the North in an attempt to not start a war between styles. I believe the only definitive style was Karate from Japan... but because of WWII this may have been unavoidable considering Japan and China were at war. Though I do believe that Karate has enough confidence in their style and heritage to withstand this movies insensitivity. I know no Wing Chun person who thinks any less of Karate practitioners.
