What maximum fraction of the air in the room could be displaced by the gaseous nitrogen?
What is the maximum fraction of air in a room that could be displaced by gaseous nitrogen?
Liquid nitrogen has a density of 0.808 g/mL and boils at 77 K. Researchers often purchase liquid nitrogen in insulated 201 L tanks. When the liquid is removed from the tank, it vaporizes quickly into gaseous nitrogen, which has a density of 1.15 g/L at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Suppose that all 201 L of liquid nitrogen in a tank accidentally vaporized in a laboratory with dimensions of 12.00 m × 12.00 m × 3.50 m.

(12.00 m × 12.00 m × 3.50 m) = 504 m^3 = 504 x 10^3 L total in the room
(201 x 10^3 mL N2) x (0.808 g/mL) / (1.15 g/L) = 141224 L N2 gas
(141224 L) / (504 x 10^3 L) = 0.280 [the fraction of air displaced]
