What PSI should my tires be filled to.?
I recently installed 15-inch rims on my 1992 Tercel, replacing the stock 13-inch rims that came with the car. I purchased the recommended tire size for the new rims. After about two weeks, as the weather started to get colder, I noticed that the tires appeared to be sagging. The tire sidewall indicates a maximum pressure of 49 PSI, so I inflated them to 44 PSI. While this helped reduce the sagging, someone mentioned that I might have overinflated the tires. Is this true? What is the appropriate PSI for my tires? I understand that the recommended pressure is listed in the owner's manual and on the door frame, but does that still apply when using larger rims?

There are 2 main schools of thought on tire pressure.
1- follow the door plate info…most Toyotas run a fairly low tire pressure for the vehicles, normally seen as 29(front) 26(rear)
2- follow the tire sidewall recommended setting but down a few psi..(ie- 44max psi tires are normally set to 40psi)
Having said that, please remind yourself that you have new 15 inch rims in place of the stock 13 inch rims. I suspect you went with a low profile tire as well, so in my experience, if your tire sidewall is saying 49psi max (a kumho tire?) then setting at 44 is about right for the general rule of thumb setting that many tire shops will use. Other shops will suggest you stay with the manufacturer’s recommended setting. My experience suggests that if 44 seems a bit rough, drop to 40, but not lower than 30 psi to ease some of the harshness of the ride. Good luck with your tires.
Double check the recommended PSI on the tire. I don’t think i’ve seen one that high. Having said that, your best bet is to stick with the PSI recommended on the tire. If you under-inflate, your tire will wear faster than it should and could cause a blowout. (part of the firestone tire blowout problem was dealerships underinflating tires to make the car ride better) If you over-inflate, you will risk puncturing a tire if you hit a bump too hard. You will have to add/bleed air in extreme temperature changes as the volume of the air in the tire expands and contracts. The best solution for this is to use nitrogen to fill your tires as it does not expand/contract so much with temperature change.
Also, the PSI on the tire will usually state that it is when the tires are cold, meaning the tires have been sitting for a while and there is no heat from friction.

Your tires will last longer if you maintain the proper air pressure. In fact, keeping them correctly inflated is the most important thing you can do.
To check your tire’s air pressure, you will need an accurate tire gauge. You can find one at your local tire dealer or automotive supply store.
Step 1: Finding the proper inflation:
Always use your manufacturer’s air pressure / inflation guidelines. To find this information, look:
•In your owner’s manual
•On the edge of the driver’s door or door frame
•Inside the glove box door
•On the sidewall of the tire
Although your tire will have inflation information printed on the sidewall, it is only the MAXIMUM operating pressure. You need to determine the right inflation for your vehicle.
Step 2: When to check tire air pressure
Check and adjust your tire’s inflation every few weeks. You will want to perform an additional check before any long trip or traveling with a heavy load. Always be sure to include your spare tire when you check your air pressure.
Step3: How to check your air pressure
Tires should always be checked when they are cold. For best results, the car should be:
•Driven less than a mile, or
•Not driven for an hour or more
If you must drive somewhere to get air, check and record the air pressure before you leave. When you reach the air pump, you can add the proper amount.
If you have radial tires, it is natural to notice a slight bulge in the sidewall when they are properly inflated.
Well, it sure would be helpful to know what that “recommended size” you put on was, since we need to know that in order to determine the correct inflation pressure.
The pressure listed on the tire only indicates MAXIMUM load carrying capacity of the tire at its MAXIMUM inflation pressure. It is not by any stretch a recommendation.
The pressure on the Load and Inflation tag on the door works for tires of the same size as fitted at the factory but may or may not be accurate for your plus-sized application. I can calculate what it should be – there is a simple, industry standard formula for doing this – but I do need to know the size and load range of the tire you are currently using, eg: 195/50R15 82V.

When the tire says 49 max tire pressure thats for the guy thats installing your tires to know how much they can put to seat the bead i would say 35 – 40 max is good to run hope this helps
Lee sounds right, double-check the psi on the tire. Most list both metric and sae, be certain you are reading the correct number. Good luck with it. Information on the manual and door frame usually apply to original equipment.

Hey Crazy,
Most tires inflate to 30 – 34 pounds of air…….I would never inflate to 49 pounds on a 15 inch tire…good luck dude!!!!!!!.
Keep it at 45 psi. The friction and rolling will add a couple of pounds to the pressure due to heat build-up.
