What is the difference between the colors purple and violet? Could you provide insights into their distinct characteristics, uses in art and design, and any cultural significance they may hold?

“Purple” is usually used to describe darker shades of purple, whereas “violet” (like the flower) is a lighter shade of purple.

Here are some named computer colors, used in web pages and on Unix computers (X-Windows):

Violet is used to describe the electronmagnetic phenomenon (direct light) while purple applies to pigmentation (reflected light). Not much of a difference when it hits the retina, but, from my art experieince, most violets tend toward red while most purples tend toward blue. This is especially apparent when a bit of white is mixed into both colors. By the way: Shade is the term we use to indicate the addition of black to a color; tint is the term to indicate the addition of white. If you want to indicate a blend of blue and red, the term would be a mixture, not a shade. And yes, I am sure chemists could tell you the formula differences.

A dictionary defines purple as “any of a group of colors with a hue between that of violet and red” and as a “symbol of royalty or high office.” Historically, the color purple has been associated with royalty and power. The word purple comes from the reign of King Louis the VIII. It was what the court called his many mistresses because they constantly wore the royal color: violet.

Violet is a true color with frequency in the color spectrum whereas Purple is a color generated by the eyes and brain when blue and red overlap and purple has no frequency.

Purple – Any of a group of colors with a hue between that of violet and red.

Violet – Shade of colors between blue and red

Purple is more of a general term.

Purple is a mixture of the red and blue parts of the visual spectrum (the rainbow).

Violet is its own color in the visual spectrum–the last visible color.
