I suspect that what is happening is that the plates are being put on a near horizontal surface, this will allow the wind to try to get under the bottom edge and forcing the plate off. Ideally they should be on a more vertical surface, although few cars today have such surface that is metallic. I can only suggest the self adhesive ones, but if your worried about damaging the paint, try the magnetic ones again but put a piece of masking tape across the corners to ensure they stick. The masking tape will not mark the paint provided you take it off straight after your lesson. Just had another thought, If you get two lengths of velcro, stick one part of each on the front bumper and the other part on the L plate they shouldn’t then come off. But they are still removable for when you are not driving. Unfortunately I don’t know about removing the velcro when you finally pass your test.

You can go to any auto shop and buy tonnes of them. Petrol stations should sell them as well.
