As TV screens are measured diagonally, you probably would not be losing actual size by changing to a widescreen TV. The ratio of widescreen is 16:9, the old CRT is 4:3.

I think if you can buy a TV that has little anything (like panelling, controls, speakers) to the sides of the screen, and as wide as you can acommodate in the armoir, it will have a satisfactory height and a good sized widescreen picture. Only viewing pictures in the old 4:3 ratio would suffer.

What you want is a Full screen tv. Unfortunately these tvs have been discontinued in favor of widescreen tvs. You can find some older full screen lcds on craigslist, but good luck.
