Where can I get a tranquilizer gun? There are bears living near my house.?

There are precautions to take if you live near bears…and it is NOT to use a tranquilizer gun on them. I live in an area with many bears and they have never tried to come into my house, nor approached me agressively in any way. It would be illegal for you to incapacitate a bear with a tranq. gun. When hiking…always make lots of noise so you don’t surprise a bear..if it hears you, it will try and avoid you. If you surprise it, it may be agressive. At this point, hold your ground, do NOT run. The bear will most likely run from you..if it did charge you, it is likely a bluff..it still may not even make contact but rather run off before it touches you. If it did make contact, get on your stomach with hands over your head. Wait out the attack in this position..it may end quickly..it could STILL be a bluff. If the attack continues for several minutes, it is time to turn over and fight back going for vulnerable parts such as eyes, and nose. Animal control is not going to relocate bears from their natural habitat, (perhaps if it has become a nuisance in a city or becomes habituated to humans becuse humans are feeding it)and by removing a bear and relocating it..you are basically killing it, as they will be moved to an area where there will already be a territorial bear there causing the relocated bear to strave to death and die, or be killed by the other bear. Also, what if it is a female that has cubs…would you want her relocated and have her cubs sitting in wait for her return, only to starve to death and die. Also, if you remove a bear…it may likely come back once kicked out of it’s “relocation” site by other territorial bears, OR another bear will find the empty territory and move into it. The only solution is to get along with nature and realize that you cannot play God by trying to control it..or move to an area that there are no bears if you are not willing to take precautions besides harming the bears. I work with large animals regularly. Tranquilizer guns should be left to the professionals. Even if you were able to acquire a gun and shoot an animal it will take a short time before the tranquilizer takes effect. During that time the animal could be angered and charge at the source of the anger, YOU. If you are hiking in an area which has bears, make noise as you are hiking. Most bears will hear you and just move along. They don’t want to encounter other animals.If a bear is around your house call 911. The local police or sheriff can contact the proper agency and will also ensure that your neighbors and their children and pets are safe until the animal control agents respond.... Show More

You should not ever use a tranquilizer gun. They take time to work. You may be attacked long before the bear is affected. If bears are really a problem, carry a gun. When I know bears are around I keep a gun handy. Self defense is always allowed in life or death situations. You could load shotguns shells with rubber or rock salt if you are that worried about not injuring the bears. easy, buy a 12 gauge shotgun with 18 1/2″ barrel. Load it with slugs and make the last round or two 00 buckshot. This will stop any bear out to 100 yards with the slugs, and if it is still on it’s feet and closer than 45 yards, the buckshot will finish it. I carried an Ithaca model 37, 18 1/2″ whenever I was setting the bait for my bear stand, I have seen the results of even a grizzly bear killed with buckshot by a guy in Alaska. The great part is, this same set up will handle any problem critter, four legged or two legged. Trying to use a handgun with enough power to stop a bear is not for the faint of heart. I have taken black bear with handguns. Believe me, it can be tough and scary. My current choice is a mossberg 12 gauge with 20″ barrel (which gives me 2 more rounds in the magazine, plus more accuracy, plus it can be used for bird hunting in a pinch, yet is still small enough for me to handle in close quarters. Bear proof your cabin, re-inforced door, bars on windows to keep bears out. Keep food properly contained to keep bears away from your cabin, keep your garbage away from your cabin, bears may be attracted to it. Last resort 12 guage slug shotgun, locked in gun cabinet, and slugs locked in a ammo box in another area of your cabin, proper gun care/storage, hunter safety course for anyone to handle the shotgun at the cabin, and have every one to handle the 12 guage practice shooting it, target practice. Have a good time at the cabin, but be prepared just in case.
