Where did the phrase, “You are such a card” come from?
What is the origin of the phrase, "You are such a card"? I'm curious about its historical and cultural roots, as well as how its meaning has evolved over time.

Card -- a witty or eccentric person, a "character." "The Card" is a 1911 novel by Arnold Bennett. "The word is now much less common, but it was formerly often preceded by a stock adjective, such as 'a knowing card,' 'an old card,'..." etc.
"The term itself was perhaps suggested by a phrase such as 'sure card,' meaning a winning card...Alternatively, there may be a pun on Latin 'carduus,' meaning thistle, as an instrument for combing and teasing cloth to raise its nap. The role of a card is similar." From "Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable" revised by Adrian Room (HarperCollinsPublishers, New York, 1999, Sixteenth Edition). Page 231.
I found a discussion page with other ideas too. Interesting.

"you're such a card" to me means that you're special in a good way, there's nothing like you like how there's no card the same in a deck. it means your funny & goofy because that's just how you are or when you do something unexpected like pulling an ace on a king. I love using this phrase

Actually it's not hogwash. A true christian is someone who doesn't proclaim their faith in words but by their actions do they live out their faith in JESUS CHRIST. Just as James 1:27 proclaims true religion as well.
From 'card tricks'.
You are such a card trick. (trickster).
You are such a card.
Usually said when a 'wise guy' pulls a fast one. (trick or stunt, that is).
?
The best answer is what the guy stole word for word on the same page I just read!!!!...your screen name says it all
the joker card your face is a joke
that is what people are trying too say
