A 12-kg hammer strikes a nail with a velocity of 8.5 m/s and comes to rest in a time interval of 8.0 ms. (a) What is the impulse imparted to the nail? (b) What is the average force exerted on the nail?

The impulse is the change in momentum. The hammer initially has a linear momentum of 12kg 8.5 m/s = 102 Nsec. Its final speed is 0 m/s, so its final momentum is 0 Nsec. The change in momentum = impulse = 102 Ns.
The average force accompanying a change in momentum is given by the impulse divided by the time over which the impulse is delivered. In this case, F = 102 N*sec/0.008 sec = 12750 N.
