A. magnesium and fluorineExplanation:Ionic bond is the bond which is formed between the two oppositely charged ions and are held by the strong electrostatic attraction. This is formed between the atoms which have high differing electronegativities. It is usually the bond which is formed between a nonmetal and a metal. Thus,  A. magnesium and fluorine will form an ionic bond as magnesium is metal and fluorine is nonmetal and forms Out of options, B. nitrogen and sulfur C. oxygen and chlorine, the elements mentioned are all nonmetals and can not form ionic bond. D. sodium and aluminum both are metals and thus cannot form ionic bond.

Answer is: D. sodium and sulfur. When the electronegativity difference is greater, the bond polarity is increasing..  Electronegativity (χ) is a property that describes the tendency of an atom to attract a shared pair of electrons.  Atoms with higher electronegativity attracts more electrons towards it, electrons are closer to that atom.  Δχ(Na-S) = 2.6 - 0.95 = 1.655; electronegativity difference between sodium and sulfur.Ionic bond is the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions (cations and anions). Sodium is metal (forms cation) and sulfur is nonmetal (forms anion).

Magnesium and FluorineExplanation:An ionic compound is formed by the bond between a metal and a nonmetal element. The metal will donate electrons, and will become a cation; the nonmetal will gain electrons and will become an anion. The bond will be formed by electrostatic force. On the periodic table, the nonmetals are the elements on groups 3A to 7A, except for the diagonal from Boron to Polonium. So, Nitrogen and Sulfur are both nonmetals and form a covalent compound, the same as for Oxygen and Chlorine. Sodium and Aluminium are both metals and form a metal compound. Magnesium is a metal and Fluorine a nonmetal, they form an ionic compound.

Option A = sodium and bromineExplanation:Sodium is metal while bromine is non metal. The bond formed between them is ionic.Ionic bond:Ionic bond is formed by the complete transfer of electron form metal to non metal.Sodium is belongs to the group one while bromine is present in group seventeen. The number of valance electron of bromine are seven. Bromine require one electron to complete the octet, while sodium lose its one valance electron to gain noble gas stable electronic configuration. Thus sodium transfer its electron to bromine and gain positive charge and bromine gain its electron and form negative ion. The forces present between them are electrostatic forces which are very strong.Na⁺Br⁻

Option c, Mg and FExplanation:Let's think this question.a. Nitrogen and Sulfur. They make a covalent bond to form N2S3. They are both non metallic.b. Na and Al, it is impossible for two metals to make a ionic compoundd. O and Cl also are joined by covalent bond to form Cl2O3. They are both non metallic. C is the best choice. A non metallic and a metallic element usually makes a ionic compound. It can be assured by the EN (Pauling Rule). We should substract EN (data in periodic table)ΔΕΝ = EN F - EN MgΔΕΝ = 4 - 1.2 = 2.8This is absolutely a ionic compoundIf ΔΕΝ > 1.7, it is a ionic bondIf 0.4 < ΔΕΝ > 1.7 it is a polar covalent bondIf ΔΕΝ < 0.4 it is a non polar covalent bond

The correct option is B.Explanation:Ionic bond are usually formed between a metal and a non metal. The metal usually acts as the electron donor while the non metal acts as the electron acceptor, that is, the metal give away electrons while the non metal accept the electrons. In the options given in this question, it is only the pairs in option B, that is qualify for ionic bond, this is because it consist of a metal and a non metal.
