You may be thinking of the 1996 version of Romeo and Juliet, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, in which Mercutio is portrayed by Harold Perrineau, who bears a striking resemblance to Chris Rock.

Mercutio is played by Christian Cooke in Romeo and Juliet (2013), which is set to be released later this year. He gained recognition in the UK miniseries The Promise (2010-2011) and the independent film Unconditional (2012).

The character Mercutio is derived from the word "mercurial," meaning "volatile," and he is Romeo's best friend. He receives an invitation from the Capulets and convinces Romeo to attend the party. Mercutio is ultimately stabbed during a confrontation involving Romeo, Tybalt, and himself. Grieving the loss of his best friend and consumed by rage, Romeo seeks vengeance and kills Tybalt.

Before William Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, love was not widely regarded as a suitable subject for a tragedy. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is now considered the ultimate love story of all time. The play was printed twice during Shakespeare's lifetime (1597 and 1599). He adapted the narrative from The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet (1562) by Arthur Brooke, which is a lengthy English poem based on a story by Masuccio Salernitano titled "Mariotto and Giannozza" (1476).

Did you know that some people believe England’s beloved Bard never existed? According to one longstanding theory, the literary masterpieces attributed to Shakespeare were actually written by Edward De Vere, the Earl of Oxford.
