Ideally ,the salt bridge has the same anion as the two half-cells. As metal ions are deposited, the anion concentration exceeds the metal ion concentration. Likewise, additional metal ions formed in the other half-cell are not balanced by the anions. Therefore, the anion migrates from the salt bridge to the half-cell where their concentration is lower. This balances both the mass and the charge of the redox reaction.
