Why do some people feel bad when they are alone for an extended period? I understand that this may not hold true for everyone, but is there a specific reason why someone might start to feel negatively after a long time without communication? Is there something that intensifies during this period? Is it akin to an addiction, where after not receiving social interaction for some time, one begins to experience withdrawal symptoms? I'm not looking for evolutionary justifications or simplistic responses like “this is how we evolved” or “humans are social animals.” Instead, I am interested in understanding the mechanisms at play: what exactly happens to a person during prolonged solitude?
