Worms in dog food? Help?

Sorry this is kinda gross. This morning my parents found worms in our dogs food. Some were very small and white while a few others large enough to see without looking really closely. We threw the food out and cleaned the dog dishes, but should we take the dog to the vet? And in some way, even if we didn’t eat the dog food, could the worms affect me or my family?

This is very bad, I would take my dog immediately to the nearest Banfield (any other pet hospital) and get it checked to heart worms. Check in the dog’s feces if theres any worms, I know this is very gross, but do it to see if your dog has tape worms, these can be fatal.Can it affect your family? Certainly, if any of those worms gets into any of you systems, they will reproduce (what your dog might have if he ate a worm) and cause internal bleeding and also a stomach virus.I know, its pretty gross but its the truth. Oops, you should have taken some of that wormy food to the vet to find out what those worms were. If the food sat outside, particularly if it was canned food, the worms were probably fly larvae (maggots) which don’t live in living dogs’ intestinal tracts or hearts. Next time, be sure to pick up and throw the food away after 30 minutes, especially on a warm day, as canned food and/or dry food that has been moistened will spoil and the spoiled food can kill a dog.If those were maggots, they won’t affect your family. I’m sure you must have killed them, right? So they won’t even live to become flies.

I get the maggot type worms in my dogs food as well but the adults are brown beetles…not flies…no matter how hard I look at it I still find them and many are so very tiny but grow fast…I don’t understand how a dog food company can package dog food and there be worms IN the food already…they have to come from somewhere…I check the food daily and clean out the container but still they come but only in the summer…never in the winter…

they were probably maggots. They shouldn’t harm your dog, but if you just want to make sure and feel safe about it, take the dog to the vet. And the maggots probably got there because you left the food out over night. Be careful not to leave the dogs food lying around during the summer months… flies get to everything.. :/

you should really be concerned if your dog starts to lose weight because that is a sign of worms but if your dog ate most of the food get a fecal float test done to be sure that their is no intestinal parasites in your dog that could cause harm but if its maggots the acid in the stomach would kill them

What you most probably saw were maggots. Laid by flies. Don’t leave dog food lying around, especially in the summer months. There’s no danger to you or your dogs (extra protein) but you should never leave food lying around, period. Basic hygiene.

those are probably just maggots, you just left the food out too long and flies laid eggs in your dogs food overnight, i doubt they would harm your dog if ingested. i highly doubt anything else. anyone who says otherwise probably doesnt understand biology as parasites would always apear in the feces NOT IN THE FOOD, thats silly, they start as eggs in the food then become mature in the host NOT IN THE FOOD THAT DOESNT MAKE ANY SENSE, THEY WOULD DIE CAUSE THEY ARE PARASITES AND NEED A HOST, dont listen to these other imbeciles. so next time dont leave food out overnight, and if your still feeling a bit uneasy check your animals feces.

You should take your dog to the vet just to be safe, the dog might’ve eaten some, and could get something like tapeworms or roundworms.
