Stewart was married to Andy Stewart, whom she met while attending Barnard College in Manhattan.
Andy and Martha ended their 29-year marriage in an acrimonious divorce in 1990. Andy later married one of Stewart's kitchen assistants.
After their divorce, Martha dated Sir Anthony Hopkins. Their relationship ended after she saw The Silence of the Lambs. She stated that she couldn't avoid associating Hopkins with Hannibal Lecter.
