Are insects animals?

My husband and I have an ongoing discussion about whether insects are considered animals. He argues that insects are not animals, while I maintain that they are. I understand that insects are not mammals and belong to different taxonomic groups, but they also aren’t classified as plants or minerals. Given these distinctions, I believe that insects must be categorized as animals. Can someone clarify this debate for us?

They absolutely are.

All insects are under the Kingdom Animalia.

Insects are a CLASS under the Phylum Arthropoda.

My husband and I have an ongoing “discussion”. He says that insects are NOT animals and I say they are. I know they are not mammals and are in a different genus and family….but they are not plants or a mineral, so they must be an animal, right?

If you can see it without a microscope, it can move on it’s own, and your not at the bottom of the ocean then yes it’s an animal. Cluster bacteria can form big enough for humans to see, but the mass is still extremely tiny and can only form at the bottom of the ocean.

There are five (well now six) major Kingdoms of Living Things:

1) Plant 2) Animal 3) Fungus 4)Bacteria-Monera

5) Eukaryote-Protists organisms

ALL Living Thins fit into one of those kingdoms

insects are under the ANIMAL KINGDOM !

You are correct, they are a living breathing being that needs to eat and does not photosyntize for energy. They are the largest and most diverse animal group on Earth. Good for you for rationalizing that.

They are animals belonging to Kingdom Animalia. People generally feel that insect are neither animals no plant, what are they then. The same is true for micro-organism like Bacteria and viruses and also wroms.
