Big black bees questions?

I frequently observe large black bees flying around wherever I go, and I have a few questions about them:

  1. Do these bees sting?
  2. Do they tend to follow or approach people?
  3. What are these bees called, assuming you know which ones I'm referring to?
  4. Should I be concerned about the presence of these bees?

Thank you!

The most common type of large black bee is the carpenter bee. Compare pictures here http://bugguide.net/node/view/3508/bgimage .

1. The females are capable of stinging, but they rarely do unless you try to grab them. Honey bees will sting readily to defend their colony’s nest. Carpenter bees are solitary, and so they have no colony to protect.

2. Many bees are attracted to bright colors, so they may follow people wearing white or brightly colored clothing.

3. There are many species of carpenter bees. I don’t know where you live, so I can’t narrow it down for you. The link I gave you can help if you browse around that site for a while.

4. You don’t need to worry about your personal safety. If these bees are near your house, you may need to worry about any exposed, untreated wood, as these bees bore a tunnel into wood and lay eggs inside it. They don’t do a lot of damage, but a lot of bees could weaken the wood in your house.

They were carpenter bees, and they sometimes cause significant damage to wooden buildings.
