An alkaline battery produces electrical energy according to the following equation. Zn(s) + 2 MnO2(s) + H2O(l) = Zn(OH)2(s) + Mn2O3(s)1mol Zn requires 2 mol MnO2 Molar mass Zn = 65.39g/mol Molar mass MnO2 = 54.94+2*16 = 86.94g/mol 2mol = 173.88g 65.39g Zn reacts with 173.88g MnO2 1g Zn will react with 173.88g/65.39g MnO2 Mass ratio = Zn : MnO2 = 1: (173.88/65.39) Mass ratio = Zn:MnO2 = 1: 2.659If you reverse this and calculate: 173.88g MnO2 will react with 65.39g Zn Then ratio = 65.39/173.88 = 1: 0.3761 ( which is what you got , allowing for slight molar mass differences) This is the mass ratio MnO2: Zn - which is not what was asked....
