Drill holes in Catalytic Converter?
My catalytic converter is malfunctioning, and I can't afford to replace it right now. Instead of cutting it out as my mechanic suggested, I've heard that I can drill holes in it and reposition a hanger to remove the debris inside. Will this method work as a temporary fix, and how loud can I expect it to be afterward?

what i usually do is remove the cat, take a big steel rod and just start ramming it inside the converter and the little pieces of stuff will fall out and it wont be any louder if you still run mufflers.

There is a trend here, which is that all of these idiots told you some lie and all have massive thumbs down. The truth is you can gut the catalytic converter (CAT) in most vehicles by using a long drill or punch and will not have to cut a flap in the system. In the event this is required it would be more cost efficient to just cut it off and weld in some straight pipe with some new fittings for O2 sensors, and a spark plug anti fouler may be needed to fool the system into allowing the emissions without throwing codes. Some naturally aspirated (NA) vehicles may require a CAT for better fuel efficiency since back pressure needs to be a little higher on a weaker NA motor. Turbo vehicles usually always benefit from a reduction in back pressure allowing a turbo vehicle to realize higher gains overall.
Any lies about dying from exhaust in the cab are merely that...lies. The CAT prevents unnecessary polluting out the back of the exhaust and is mandated federally. Some states do not have emission checks to make sure your CAT is on, and in most cases you will still pass an inspection if you still have the heat shield in place, especially if it is only visual.
Many pipes are already made for most vehicles and you simply must look for a "cat delete pipe, test pipe, down pipe with cut-out" in order to find the various options available.
Thanks for reading and hope that you learned something today.
I hope that this clears up the issue.
So go out there and get those power gains!

Drill holes in Catalytic Converter?
My CC is bad and I cant afford a new one right now. Rather then just cutting it out like the mechanic suggested I heard I can just drill holes in it and move a hanger around to get the crap out..... Will this work for a quick fix and how loud will it end up?
It should not make a difference in sound, that is the what the muffler is for!
If you just break up the "crap" it could plug your exhaust then you will have a second problem!
You are probably best spending the money the first time.
Look into a aftermarket CC, it will save you a lot of money!
You can pick one up for under a 100 dollars!
A muffler shop might charge you a hour labour!
I just had one installed on my Chev P/U for $110 installed!
Like 1 dude said. Jus nock the stuff out. Use a broom stick or a metal rod thats slightly bendable. Thats much usially easier then welding a strait pipe but that depends on the location. If u can jus take off the converter then u can boar it out urself. No welder and no perfect fitting pipe needed. Boaring it out will basicly make it a strait pipe. But like I said. That depends on the location. Good luck

If your cc is bad it is most commonly plugged up. what caused the failure. slow city driving, excess oil consumption, not going out on the road and blowing it out every now and then. fix that first.
.
1. remove it from the car. don't cut it out unbolt it.
2. now that you can work on it. get a metal rod that will reach to the end of the [cat] , take and flatten one end, then mount a 1/2 drill on the other end and drill it out.but don,t go Thur the walls of the cc. don't trash what is in side you can sell it at recycle center.
OR take a torch an heat it up and burn out the built up thrash. don't over heat it [melt it] take your time, when smoke stops coming out of the other end it is clean.
3. remount it.
4. the muffler is down stream from the {CAT} so the sound will not change. and this way you have the right back pressure in your system so the engine will run right
!!! IF YOU DRILL HOLES THROUGH IT!!!!
1. YOU WILL HAVE GASSES COMING OUT THAT WILL ENTER THE DRIVING COMPARTMENT. THEY WILL MAKE YOU SICK OR KILL YOU!!!

It's illegal for a mechanic to do it any where. Violates EPA regulations
yes you could , but by removeing it, then selling it to a scarp yard,, you going to find, it worth from 60 to 100, ,an the use the money to but a pipe an replace it
