empirical formula for mercury and oxygen?
There are two binary compounds of mercury and oxygen. Heating either of them results in the decomposition of the compound, with oxygen gas escaping into the atmosphere while leaving a residue of pure mercury. When heating 0.6498 g of one of the compounds, a residue of 0.6018 g of mercury remains. In the case of the other compound, heating 0.4172 g results in a mass loss of 0.016 g. How can I determine the empirical formula of each compound?

Atomic weights: Hg=200.6 O=16
Let the first compound be called C.
0.6498gC – 0.6018gHg = 0.048g O
0.6018/200.6 = 0.003
0.048/16 = 0.003
0.003/0.003 = 1.000
The empirical formula of the first compound is HgO
Let the second compound be called C.
0.4172gC – 0.016gO = 0.4012g Hg
0.4012/200.6 = 0.002
0.016/16 = 0.001
The empirical formula of the second compound is Hg2O
