Random distribution patterns among species are among the rarest phenomena in nature. Very few species exhibit a complete lack of interaction between individuals. It is uncommon for members of a species not to engage with one another or to compete for resources, as these interactions are fundamental in determining distribution patterns. This tendency for attraction and competition makes random distribution an infrequent occurrence in the natural world.

Species distribution is the manner in which a biological taxon is spatially arranged. There are several types of species distribution: clumped distributon (the most common, where the distance between neighboring individuals is minimized), regular distribution (the distance between neighboring individuals is maximized because of the competition for resources) and random distribution. Random distribution in which the position of each individual is independent of the other individuals is the rarest type in nature because. This distribution pattern usually occurs in habitats where environmental conditions and resources are consistent and is characterized by the lack of any strong social interactions between species. It is rare because there are rarely species with any social interactions.
