farsi vs arabic?

What are the differences between Farsi and Arabic? I am curious about their usage, which language is more widely spoken, and which one is more challenging to learn. Additionally, in the business and military sectors, which language is more desirable for employees? I am interested in studying aviation and becoming a pilot, so I would like to know which language would be the better choice for my career path.

Well, Arabic and Farsi ( a Persian language) belong to different language families.

Arabis is a Semitic language belonging to the Afro-Asiatic

Semitic language family.

It is officially spoken in Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Western Sahara.

But the spoken language in these countries differs more or less from Modern Standard Arabic.

Use: Estimates of native speakers between 186 and 422 million. According to Ethnologue, 246 million including second language speakers, (1999 est).

Well, on the other hand FARSI (Persian) is an Indo-Iranian language belonging to the Indo-European language family.

It is officially spoken in language in: Afghanistan (here it is also called DARI which is little different), Iran,Tajikistan.

Well, the two languages use the Arabic script, but in Farsi it has another pronunciation and more letters.

Use: 72 million native speakers, ca. 62 million second language speakers = 134 million total

There are some words in Farsi coming from Arabic. That is because of Al-Qu'ran.

But all in all they are different languages. The people who speak it cannot understand each other.

As Farsi is indo-european I can imagine it to be easier for you to learn because English is as well Indo-European, even if it belongs to another branch.

Concerning your question which of those two is more desirable in an employee I cannot give an answer. In any case, it will be good to know one of them.

Well, I can say for one that they're completely unrelated. Farsi, or Persian, is an Indo-european language, descended from the same language as English, whereas Arabic is a semitic language, like Hebrew.

According to wikipedia, there are about 72 million native Farsi speakers, versus about 300-400 million Arabic natives.

However, Farsi is also closely related to Dari, another Persian dialect spoken in Afghanistan. That may be an advantage toward Farsi.

Business-wise, I would say Arabic is without-doubt the way to go. Way more speakers, plus there is a lot more business opportunity in the combined Arab-speaking world than in Iran/Afghanistan. All the biggest middle-east financial centers are in Arab speaking countries. Plus the entire western world is trying to boycott business relations with Iran.

On the military side, I think they would both be very useful. Arabic speakers are in high demand, and I'm sure Farsi speakers must be in short-supply. And increasingly useful as US-Iran relations go sourer.

According to the Navy, Arabic is a bit harder. They give Arabic translators 531 days training vs. 429 days for Farsi translators.

you have ur own reasons, but if you are looking for some advise here are mine for u: 1- arabic is far more popular around the world, its the official lang for more than 20 countries while farsi is only common in deserts of iran and afghanistan. 2- learning farsi will be a tough matter after a while because it has very sparse grammars and you will have to memorize many cases and sentences. 3- farsi is considered as a dialect of arabic because over 70% of its phrases are arabic ones beside of common roots and alphabet, so it seems if u know arabic first then u will have easy time transfering to farsi.

Farsi is an Indo-European language. Arabic is a semitic language. They are members of completely unrelated language families.

Because of their Muslim culture, however, Farsi speakers use a lot of Arabic words, just as we use a lot of modified Latin words in English.

Farsi is also written in a somewhat modified version of the Arabic alphabet. The alphabet that a language is written with, however, has no relationship to the family of languages a given language belongs to. It would be possible, for example, to devise a spelling system for English using the Russian alphabet.

I speak Farsi. but come to think of it if you're trying to learn one of these languages, You'll have more chance to find a good job when you speak Arabic, otherwise Farsi is fabulous language to learn.

They've got totally different grammar. Arabic and Farsi both have the same alphabet but Arabic has 28 letters and Farsi has 32.

Many Arabic words have come to Farsi but it doesn't mean there are not the words instead or the original Farsi words have disappeared!

These days you can learn how to speak Arabic over the internet. Check out this online course, it's voted as the best Arabic online course of all time: http://www.rocketlearner.com/arabic The course is very easy to follow, I was able to learn Arabic in just 3 months.

I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a Arabic language teacher but that would have cost me over $800 per month. Good thing with this internet, $800 it's a lot of money for me.
