Question

When filling out a p46 when it says present circumstances and you have to tick the box saying “this is my first job since last 6 April” is that this april 2009 just gone by or april 2008? Also can the employer tell your last job details when you send this off?? I don’t really want them to. thanks if you have help!

It’s referring to the most recent 6th April, i.e. the one this year, which is the start of the 2009/10 tax year.The tax office won’t reveal your previous employer. If you ever start a job with a P45 from a previous employer, you have the option of sending it directly to the tax office instead of handing it to your new employer, but you may pay too much tax for a while as a result. Any overpaid tax will be refunded at the end of that tax year.

It is 6th April 2009. The boxes you tick indicate to employer if he can put you on emergency code (647L, on a week or month 1 basis) or Basic Rate (a straight 20%).No, there is no indication to employer of your previous employment history. I suggest you contact and confide in tax office staff, so that a correct and cumulative code number can be issued for you. If you have been employed since 6th April, all that will be told to employer is what previous pay and tax figures to use. Source of figures is confidential.

The P46 form is simply to confirm your NI number, nothing else, they don’t get shown previous work details.The april 6th they are referring to is the one that last occurred, i.e. the last time it was april 6th. So right now it would be april 6th 2009.

The current rules for PAYE (now NPS) assumes you will settle your SA matters seperately. if you tick box A you will have a cumulative tax code and a bill for your SA. If you tick box B you will overpay your tax and this will be factored in when your SA bill comes through. Unless it’s big money we wont fuss and tidy up in the end of year and SA setttlement.
