What are Goethe’s three questions of arts criticism, and why are they particularly challenging to apply to theatre as an art form?

Goethe's 3 questions are:

What was the artist trying to do?

Was he/she successful in doing it?

Was it worth doing?

If we can answer these three questions, then the piece is good. If not, it's a waste of time.

They're not difficult to apply, however, critics often just skip to "was it worth doing it?" and never go beyond that.

If we start with the first question and try to understand the artist's intentions, then we can do the rest of the analysis, however, if we jump right into weather it was worth it or not, we have no where to go. That made more sense in my head.....hope that helps :/
