- Titanium (III) chloride, a substance used in catalysts for preparing polyethylene, is produced by the high-temperature reaction of TiCl4 vapor with H2:
2TiCl4(g) + H2(g) → 2TiCl3(s) + 2HCl(g)
Part A: How many grams of TiCl4 are needed for a complete reaction with 135 L of H2 at 430°C and 795 mm Hg pressure?
Part B: How many liters of HCl gas at STP will be produced from the reaction described in Part A?

Moles H2 = pV/RT = 1.05 atm x 135 L / 0.08206 x 703 K =2.46
the ratio between H2 and TiCl4 is 1 : 2
moles TiCl4 needed = 2 x 2.46 = 4.92
mass TiCl4 = 4.92 mol x 186.692 g/mol=933.3 g
Moles HCl produced = 2.46 x 2 = 4.92
At STP 1 mole occupies 22.4 L
Volume HCl = 4.92 x 22.4=110.2 L
