How can I tell the size of my septic tank?

My husband and I purchased 12 acres with a creek two years ago in Brown County, Ohio. We had an old trailer on the property that is no longer livable, and we would like to replace it with a 16×80 three-bedroom, two-bathroom single-wide home. My question is: do you think we can use the same septic tank? We finally found the tank this weekend and uncovered the top. It appears to be approximately 6×4 feet with two lids. What size would that make the tank?

You need to check with the County Building Code office. Many areas use the amount of bedrooms to determine the septic tank size. They will also know how big the current tank is.

the town building code dept. should have the record on file. Tank sizes in most states are determined by the # of bedrooms. Taking a guess it’s a 1000 galon tank wich is suffient for 3 bedrooms in most areas. You will need to check this out with the codes dept.

Most tanks are for a minimum of four people, the size should not present a problem.

The more important thing is the size of the drain field, as if it is too small for the number of people using it, it will not work properly and will end up polluting the ground.

If you have the inside dimensions, you can multiply them and get the number of cubic feet in the tank (as previously mentioned). Multiply that number by 7.48 to get the tank capacity in gallons.

If you only have the outside dimensions of a plastic tank, use them as being the same as the inside dimensions. If you have the outside dimensions of a concrete tank, measure the thickness of the top of the tank when you get the inside dimension for the depth of the tank (at the inspection port). Subtract twice the thickness from the length and subtract twice the thickness from the width before multiplying them to get the number of cubic feet in the tank.

If the unit is 6Lx4W you need the depth and you do a volume calculation. LxWxH in feet will give you the cubic foot volume.
