How is Frodo related to Bilbo Baggins?
I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan and know almost everything about it, but I'm a bit confused about the relationship between Frodo and Bilbo Baggins. Frodo refers to Bilbo as "Uncle," but in the cartoon "The Hobbit," there's a special feature that mentions Frodo is actually Bilbo's adopted son and heir. Can someone clarify this for me? I understand what an heir is, but I'm curious about the specifics of their relationship. Thank you! 🙂 Sorry for the lengthy question! 🙁 By the way, I'm 15, so I might take a bit longer to process things.

Frodo and Bilbo are cousins. They sometimes referred to each other as uncle/nephew because of their large difference in age (70-some years). Frodo’s parents died, Bilbo had no children, and Frodo was the eldest of Bilbo’s younger cousins and his favorite, so he adopted him as his heir.
Edit: It’s a common misconception that they are actually uncle/nephew, but I don’t see the point thumbs downing me without a little research. It is referenced directly in The Fellowship of the Ring in the very first chapter. Also, the family tree in the appendices shows Bilbo as an only child – meaning it is impossible for him to have any nephews or nieces. Go by the books, not the movies! I’ll add the quotes in my source.
To be exact, Frodo is Bilbo’s Second cousin’s son. Look at the Baggins family tree in Wikipedia.

How is Frodo related to Bilbo Baggins?
So I’m a HUGE Lord of the Rings nerd i know almost all there is to know but…. How are they related…. Frodo calls Bilbo Uncle…. but if you watch the cartoon “The Hobbit” on the Special Features screen on the bottom it says Of Hobbits and explains a little about the movie and so…
Jess has the most accurate answer.
Frodo does refer to Bilbo as his uncle, but they’re cousins on both sides of Frodo’s family (both mother and father)
When Frodo was still in his tweens (the irresponsible twenties between childhood and coming of age at 33) Bilbo adopted him as his heir and during their joined birthday party (as the party in the movie was celebrating Frodo’s 33rd and Bilbo’s 111) Frodo became a man and came into his inheritance.
Bilbo quantum leaped into the Game of Thrones universe, and took Daenerys’ first born, then traveled back and injected hobbit genes into him, that’s why in the appendix, Frodo is the son of Drogo.

Frodo is Bilbo’s nephew. Frodo’s parents drowned and Bilbo took Frodo in.
Also in some countries or cultures calling someone Uncle is seen as more affectionate then brother or father, so Just by calling him uncle Frodo thinks very highly of Bilbo. Someone as great as Tolkein would not have put it in his works as a mistake, Tolkein must have known a lot about other cultures and felt it more appropriate.
