How tall is a traffic light (traffic signal) / How large is a traffic light?

I just spent a 1/2 hour searching for the size of a traffic light and I can’t find it anywhere. I want to know how tall they are, and the diameter of the lights (the light as a whole – not a small light in a grouping of lights). Years ago I saw one on the ground being fixed and it looked about 5 feet tall. They look small on the wire up there, but how big are they really?! Please try to provide a source for your answer so that I believe you. Thanks!!

Look at the next tractor trailor that goes by. A rare one will be over 13′ 6". The lights will have to clear this. Fedearl highway standards are higher. Light size will be governed by the size of an intersection and the distance from the lights and stopped cars. (I have one over 1 foot in diameter.) Typical size for city lights are 6-8′ in diameter. The latest Light emitting diodes are about to make size and shape of traffic lights another variable. (You have to see them. If brightness is the requirement and a small LED array can be seen OK, the lights will get smaller. There is also the possibility of making one light perform all colors, easy with LEDS. This would give fits for color blind people who assume red, orange, green by position. Probably won’t happen.... Show More
You are both half right, lights can be either timed or use a sensor, or a combination of both. However, the sensors are magnetic and not pressure, in most cases. Some are now using infrared sensors on the light that will detect a car. For the person on the motorcycle, here’s a little trick, if you don’t think the light has detected you, try shutting your motorcycle, then restarting it. The magnetic flux from the starter will sometimes trip the sensor.... Show More
The standard nominal diameters are 8 inches (200 mm) and 12 inches (300 mm). The authority on traffic lights and on traffic control devices (signs, striping, etc.) is the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (called MUTCD or sometimes "Muttsie" by traffic engineers), published by the Department of Transportation.http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/You can read it on line here: http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno-2003r1.htm.The specific section that covers the size of the lenses is Section 4D.15....
