I always get called into work on my off days?

I work part time as a dishwasher and its supposed to be 4 hours. On weekends, someone always calls in "sick" so they want me to come in and work a double shift, which is 10 hours total dishwashing. I'm getting tired of it, but I feel like I can't say no because its not like I am doing anything if I am just gonna come into work later. But I want time to relax and washing dishes all day and everyday isn't fun. How should I tell them "No" and that I just want to work my regular shift? I will also feel guilty if there is no dishwasher that shift.

On the up side you are establishing that you are a reliable employee who can be counted on. But if this isn't something you want to do full time, or if your not trying to work your way up in a kitchen (my husband started as a dishwasher and within a year was on prep, then moved to actually cooking) then you should just not answer when they call, turn your phone off. You could say ok, I'll work today but then I need Friday off. Or simply say NO, hello it's your day off, They can't force you to work, but no one but you can make you feel guilty about it. I've seen restaurants pull waitresses in for dishwashing, or the manager has to do it. There is always someone who will have to pull the slack, but the blame is on the unreliable employee not you.... I am not a dishwasher so I can't relate to that but I can relate to always being called in on my days off, the way I see it is extra money; who doesn't like and need the extra money. Also, you are showing them that you are committed and most likely when there is an opportunity in advancement you'll name will come up (that's a fact) managers and leaders like workers that can invest there time to the job. So if your not doing anything anyway I say why not. But if you REALLY DON'T WANT TO WORK, when tell call you in say that you are not even close to home that your somewhere else and wont make it till your shift starts. That excuse should work since you have your own things to do. But remember since there was no morning shift then most likely all to most of the dishes will be waiting for you.... Show More
On the positive side, you might be able to move up to a better job in the restaurant, if you establish a record of reliability. Perhaps you could get them to arrange your schedule so that you regularly work a full shift on weekends, but not a double shift. Working on weekends can free up your time during the week to get business done, or even look for a better job somewhere else.If you really want to say "no" once in a while, make your reasons (not excuses) solid and believable. Being out of town is reasonable. Claiming illness is iffy. Saying you have other plans will make them annoyed with you. In any case, you should not say "no" more than once every month or so.... tell them no, don't answer the phone when they call..it's not about "Being reliable" i've gone through that bs way too many times, it's called their understaffed and should hire more reliable employees. don't feel guilty for not wanting to work on your day off or the extra time they need you for. you have a life that's not centered around work and that's how workaholics want you to feel... You are in a no win situation here. Being a part-timer you have to take the offer, otherwise they could cut your hours down, so many things they can do. They dictate the terms..theyre way, or the highway.... Show More
it's your right to say no because that's only an extra sched of your work asking to you. You can refuse occasionally and telling them that your not available, you have an appointment with somebody. Or you need to rest too, your not feeling well. They must understand you. But, remember occasionally only not always.... Show More
Those kind of people can just **** themselves. If you were not scheduled, tell them no. I know what you mean. I hate people who expect their employees to treat crap jobs seriously... Show More
Just ask your boss for some extra money or alternatively if you're really reluctant to do so just tell em than you've got your plans already.... Show More
You don't do scheduals so its not your problem you give them an availability for a reason if the call you in just say your not available... Show More
