I have worked in electronic banking for over twenty years. When you write a check, a credit card, or a debit card, you are handing out personal information that eventually makes it to web sites. Grocery chains and department stores sell the information.

Here is what I do:

I take cash from only my own banks machine. I pay cash for most things.

I use my debit card ONLY at the ATM machine.

I use my credit card to buy petrol, rent cars, hotels, and airline tickets.

I pay the credit card in full before any interest is accrued.

I have credit cards with banks in the USA, Singapore, and China. I have a Singapore issued American Express card. I use prepaid credit cards for some things.

The credit card leaves a paper trail. If I disappear, the police can know where I last used my credit card, and therefore know where to start looking for me.

If I am accused of some crime, my credit card paper trail is my alabi.

Debit cards are full of security holes, and are not protected by the same federal laws as credit cards are. Never use a debit card online.
