Predict the bond formed between each of the following pairs of atoms is ionic, nonpolar or polar covalent?

Determine the type of bond (ionic, nonpolar covalent, or polar covalent) formed between the following pairs of atoms:

a) Sulfur (S) and Oxygen (O) in SO₃
b) Silicon (Si) and Phosphorus (P)
c) Calcium (Ca) and Bromine (Br)
d) Oxygen (O) and Oxygen (O)
e) Phosphorus (P) and Oxygen (O) in H₃PO₄

The key to solving this problem is to know the electronegativity values of the above atoms. If the difference between bonding atoms is under 1.2 they are considered to be covalent, above 1.8 they are ionic and between 1.2 – 1.8 they are polar covalent.

Now the electronegativity values and differences dE:

a) S = 2.58 and O = 3.44, dE = 0.86, it’s under 1.2 so the S—O bond is non polar.

b) Si = 1.90 and P = 2.19 dE = 0.29 so Si—P is even more non polar than S—O

c) Ca = 1.00 and Br = 2.96 dE = 1.96, it’s over 1.8 so Ca—Br is ionic as indeed one would expect when any metal such as Ca combines with a non metal such as Br

d) O and O are the same so the electronegativity difference is 0.00, O—O it’s a totally non polar bond.

e) P = 2.19 and O = 3.44 dE = 1.25 so the P—O bond is just about polar covalent

Na and O form an ionic bond. They do so to satiafy their octets. They form Na 2 O, Na2O2, NaO2(superoxide). O & O form non polar covalent bond because of abscence in electronegativity diff. P&O form polar covalent bond.
