Predict the products of each of these reactions and write

Predict the products of each of the following reactions and write balanced complete ionic and net ionic equations for each. If no reaction occurs, please indicate "NO REACTION."

  1. NaI(aq) + Hg2(NO3)2(aq) →
  2. HClO4(aq) + Ba(OH)2(aq) →
  3. Li2CO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) →
  4. HCl(aq) + Li2CO3(aq) →

2 Answers

1.

2 NaI(aq) + Hg2(NO3)2(aq) → 2 HgI(s) + 2 NaNO3(aq)

2 HClO4(aq) + Ba(OH)2(aq) → Ba(ClO4)2 + 2 H2O

Li2CO3(aq) + NaCl(aq)→ NOREACTION

4.

2 HCl(aq) + Li2CO3(aq) → 2 LiCl(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

In doing these, you need to consider the possible products of each reaction and think about whether one product is insoluble, or forms a molecular compound like water, or forms a gas or something like that. So, in the first one, Hg2I2 is insoluble and precipitates. So, the complete ionic equation will be:

2 Na+(aq) + 2 I-(aq) + Hg22+(aq) + 2 NO3-(aq) –> Hg2I2(s) + 2 Na+(aq) + 2 NO3-(aq)

The net ionic equation removes everything whose state doesn’t change. So, for this one, the net ionic equation is:

Hg22+(aq) + 2 I-(aq) –> Hg2I2(s)

  1. Here you have an acid and a base, so this is a neutralization reaction, and you will for H2O(l).

  2. These are two soluble salts, and you can’t form anything different, so for this one –> NOREACTION

  3. This is also a neutralization reaction in which 2 H+ ions will react with CO32- ions to form H2O(l) and CO2(g).

Hope that helps…
