Read the excerpt from Midsummer by Derek Walcott. With the stampeding hiss and scurry of green lemmings, midsummer’s leaves race

Read the excerpt from "Midsummer" by Derek Walcott: "With the stampeding hiss and scurry of green lemmings, midsummer’s leaves race to extinction like the roar of a Brixton riot tunneled by water hoses." How does the poem’s allusion to the 1981 Brixton riot enhance the imagery and themes presented in this passage?

C. illustrates the strong feelings associated with the poem’s subject matter. In this excerpt, the author references the 1981 Brixton riot. He claims that the roar of the leaves racing to extinction is similar to the roar of the riots. The allusion does not describe what Brixton looked like, nor does it suggest that many riots will be mentioned. Finally, the author's purpose is not to confuse the reader. What the author intends to do is to illustrate the feelings associated with the poem's subject matter. In other words, he wants to emphasize the feelings of action and chaos that are present in the poem.
