Sickle Cell Punnett Square help!!!!?

If two individuals are heterozygous for the hemoglobin sickle cell allele, what is the probability that their offspring will have full-blown sickle cell anemia? Please use a Punnett Square to demonstrate your work. I would greatly appreciate your help with this. Thank you! 😊

Lets say;

normal gene = S

sickle cell gene =s

So a heterozygous person = Ss

Punnett square for offspring between two heterozygous people :

| S | s |

——+——–+———

S | SS | Ss |

——+——–+———-

s | Ss | ss |

—————————-

So from this you can see that 1/4 (25%) gets ss, i.e. 25% have full blown sickle cell anemia

50% will be heterozygous and the remaining 25% will be normal

That is true for same size populations. To know the expected values of incidence, that are 1/12 for Carriers and 1/500 for infected (http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/sicklecell/data.html), you also need to account the following formula: F(SS)+2*F(Ss)+F(ss)=1, so solving it with the real incidence you have F(SS)+1/12+1/500=1, this means that you have in reality the following probability for the general population: AA = 91,5%, Ss or sS = 8,3% and finally ss = 0,2%, and those are the probabilities that really matter…
