Solution of an unknown solute in cyclohexane. Freezing-point, Find molality?

Assume you have a solution of an unknown solute in cyclohexane that exhibits a freezing-point depression of 9.50 °C. What is the molality of this solution? Please note that the molal freezing-point constant of cyclohexane is 20.2 °C/m.

To determine the molality, you first need to calculate the number of moles of the solute. Would you need additional information, such as the mass of the solute or its molar mass, to proceed? Remember, molality is calculated as the number of moles of solute per kilogram of solvent.

The equation for freezing point depression is

delta T = Kcm

For your problem delta T = 9.5; K = 20.2 and you need to solve for m, the molality. So, m = deltaT/K = 9.5/20.2 = 0.47 molal.

You must you the melting point depression equation: delta T = ikm i = van't off factor (excuse my spelling) assume this is 1 k = freezing point depression constant (for cyclohexane in this case, you should be given this value) m = molality of the solution = moles of unknown solute / kg of solvent (.0502kg) Using that equation, you can determine the molality of the solution. Since, molality of the solution = moles of unknown solute / kg of solvent; molality = (grams solute/molar mass solute) / (kg of solvent) This can be done because molar mass = grams/mole ----> moles = grams/(molar mass) Since all variables are known except molar mass, you can calculate the molar mass of the unknown substance.
