Sore throat, stiff neck, ear ache, and headache… what could it be?

About three days ago, I developed a really bad sore throat. Since then, I’ve also been dealing with a headache, which I think might be from the stress of the sore throat. The next day, I started experiencing a stiff neck, and yesterday, an earache began as well. I’m 14, and I have state softball in two weeks, so I’m hesitant to see a doctor just yet—I’m worried they might say I need my tonsils out, which could mean missing the tournament.

My brother had his tonsils removed when he was around 10, so I’m wondering if this could be something similar for me. Do you think I might need my tonsils out, or could it be something else entirely?

And yes, I know I should probably see a doctor, but I want to understand what might be going on first.

I hope you feel better soon. I think you might have like an infection or something. I guess the only way to cure it is to see a doctor. When my throat hurt me a long time ago, I was afraid to see a doctor. But eventually you will have to, so it’s better to go to a doctor now, so if you have an infection or something you can cure it before it spreads or gets worse.

I had a sinus infection a couple of days ago, and I went to the doctor as soon as my mom could take me…and i’m glad I went. Because the doctor said the infection would have spread to my throat….But it wasn’t a big deal. It goes away with antibiotics.

I used to get sick every month and take antibiotics. Gosh, I’m sick of them!!!! But thank God I don’t anymore. ( at least not every month!) I had my tonsils taken out. I advise you to do the surgery if you have to, don’t be scared. It’s really not a big deal. Then after about a year after you do it, you could eat ICE CREAM and drink cold beverages!

Whatever you have, go to a doc, and he/she will give you medicine!

Ta-da! I hope you get well soon. But if you don’t, who cares about the stupid softball game??!!!! You’ll play next time. This is serious so you don’t have a choice. And if you did play, you wouldn’t be as good bacause you’re sick, remember?

<3 get well soon <3

(P.S: don’t drink anything cold, and don’t eat spicy food)

I know you don’t want to hear this but you NEED to see a doctor. Have you not told your parents about this? Any time you have symptoms like this and you get a stiff neck, that suggests meningitis. Meningitis is not something you want to mess around with. It is a bacterial or viral infection in your central nervous system. An infection that starts in your throat and spreads to your brain and spinal cord. Do not take chances with this one. Go see a doctor and find out what this thing is and whether or not it’s bacterial or viral. This may well clear up very quickly with antibiotics.

Sounds like you have a sinus infection that would cause the headache, earache and throat soreness, You probably dont need your tonsils out but just an antibiotic. If you do have a throat infection it is most likely strep and if you get in now to see Dr. it will probably go away with anitbiotics, unless you frequently get strep and then he may suggest your tonsils out BUT if you tell him why you are worried about the tonsils coming out he can probably put you on antibiotic to get you through state and then schedule it afterwards! Good luck!

It could be strep throat and if it is you will start to feel better as soon as you get some antibiotic. Only a dr. can tell you for sure. I doubt you need your tonsils out but you do need some medicine. Have you told an adult in your life? The sooner you get help the sooner you’ll feel better!

Whenever you show cold-like symptoms combined with a stiff or sore neck it could be meningitis, a very deadly and fast disease. Get yourself to the doctor ASAP!

Dr. Jen says sinus problem. Dr. Jen also says stop being a damn hero and see a doctor, s/he will probably be able to prescribe something to fix your problem….BUT…. it could take a week or so for the drugs to work, especially if you need antibiotics, which need this amount of time to run their course. So… the longer you leave it, the less time you’ll have to get fit for state softball. Good luck from Dr. Jen.
