STALE is to STEAL as 89475 is to?

The question "STALE is to STEAL as 89475 is to?" is likely a puzzle or a brain teaser that requires finding a similar transformation or pattern between the given word and number. Could you clarify the type of transformation being applied here? For example, is it based on rearranging letters or digits, or does it involve some other rule? Understanding the specific pattern will help in solving the analogy.

89754

When I saw there were as many letters as numbers, I knew that the numbers represented the letters.

@V - those people are doing it backwards.

They are attributing STEAL to 89475

and then figuring STALE out from there.

Not sure why because that's wrong, BUT I've seen that too.

It's 89547.

But it's easy to accidentally do 89754.

I don't know how people get 89457, though. I've seen this a few times on the profiles of girls who seemed otherwise quite intelligent. Anyone know how this is reached by mistake?

Why do so many people guess 89754? I have seen at least 5 people with this answer. What is the logic?

Take the "e" in "Stale" and move it two places to the left to get "Steal." Following the same logic, take the last character "5" and move it two places to the left to get "89547"
