The usage of commas in the sentence is correct because the underlined element serves as a non-essential clause that adds extra information without changing the sentence's overall meaning. Could you please clarify or explain the reasoning behind this punctuation choice?

If your sentence is "Michael Jordan, the basketball player, won six championships for the Chicago Bulls," then the correct answer is a nonrestrictive phrase.First of all, the underlined element cannot be a clause because there is no verb there, meaning that it has to be a phrase. Second of all, it cannot be restrictive because its meaning is not essential in this sentence - if you omitted this phrase, the sentence would still keep its meaning because everybody knows who Michael Jordan is. Thus, the correct answer is a nonrestrictive phrase.

The correct option is NON RESTRICTIVE PHRASE.A non restrictive phrase usually describes a noun in a non-essential manner.A non restrictive phrase provides additional but optional description which can be removed from the sentence without altering the overall meaning of the sentences. For instance, in the sentence given above, the phrase ' the basketball player' can be removed from the sentence without changing the meaning of the sentence. The remaining portion of the sentence will reads ; Micheal Jordan won six championships for the Chicago Bulls.
