The group and I (am or are)?

Which is the correct way to say the following:‘The group and I (are/am) going to the shops.’ Should it, in fact, be said: ‘Me and the group are going to the shops’???????????????????

Firstly, when stating a list of people including yourself, always put yourself last on that list. That is the courteous and polite thing to do. This rules out “me and the group…”.Secondly, “the group and I” are multiple subjects, i.e. plural, so you need the plural verb “are” to go with them.So, “The group and I are going to the shops.”... Nancy Kay is right. It should be “The group and I are going to the shops” because there are multiple included subjects. However, note that you should usually put yourself after everyone else, not first (so, not “I, you, and Nancy are going out to eat,” but “You, Nancy, and I.”) You don’t need any commas in there.... It is easier to understand if you say ‘me and the group are going to the shops’ however if you say ‘the group and I, are going to the shops’ that also acceptable. But you need the comma or it won’t make sense... Show More
