The movie The Strangers based on a true story?
Is the movie The Strangers really based on a true story? I just watched it an hour ago, and I’m struggling to understand how something like that could have actually happened in real life. The idea that it's a "true story" feels hard to believe—it doesn’t seem realistic at all. Watching the movie and then thinking, “That was real?” just doesn’t add up for me. Could someone clarify this? Is it really based on true events, or is the "true story" label more of a marketing strategy? I’d love to hear your thoughts and explanations.

Hollywood has sneakily made a difference between the words based and inspired. Apparently, inspired is made up while based on is truly based on a true story. The Strangers was a great movie in my opinion however, it was “inspired by a true story”. The Strangers was loosely based on various home invasion murders, including The Manson Murders, and based upon an Austrian couple that was murdered by three teenagers in their vacation home in The Czech Republic.
The True Story Behind the New Movie “The Strangers” is a mixture of three stories.
The killers, a principle male assailant and female accomplices, is based upon Charles Manson and the Manson killings.
The frantic “there’s blood everywhere” 911 phone call and “bounding to a chair and stabbing” was based on the killings in Cabin 28.
The basic story of a couple being terrorized by a group of people was based on the famous killing in the Czech Republic, which was also made into a French Film titled Ils, translated to mean “Them.”
In the Czech Republic murders, an Austrian couple are terrorized in their vacation home by three teenagers and are later killed in the forest when they try to escape. BUT, a concrete source for this alleged crime has yet to be found other than countless blog postings, leading most people to believe that the story was engineered much like the Blair Witch Project, to give Directors a legal excuse to claim that it was based on a “True Story.”
In the Cabin 28 murders, the daughter of a woman walks into a cabin where her mother, brother, and brother’s female friend were staying only to find them stabbed and hammered to death. She calls 911 frantically repeating “there’s blood everywhere,” which there was although no one heard anything all night.
This took a few hours to finally piece together, but I noticed that no one else had figured it out and wanted to be the first to say, “I cracked the story.”
So in the end The Strangers inspired by aTrue Story claim is definitely true, but a combination of several stories to appeal to general audiences. That’s Hollywood, but, as scary as it may be, also real life.
(By the Way…Bryan Bertino…the writer and director admitted to this.)

The movie The Strangers is a true story. I do not understand how this has possibly happened to anyone in real life. I just saw it an hour ago and is beginning to think the whole true story thing is well…a made up story. Watching the movie and then thinking “That was real?” It does not…

If you think The Pursuit of Happyness is boring, then I don’t think you are going to appreciate many movies based on real life, but here are a few suggestions anyway: The Blind Side Grey Gardens 127 Hours Invictus Hotel Rwanda Valkyrie The Pianist Capote Monster Temple Grandin Braveheart Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Rescue Dawn Erin Brockovich

The movie is inspired by an event from the director Bryan Bertino’s childhood, among other things[citation needed]. A stranger came to his home asking for someone who did not live there. Later, he found out that empty homes in the neighborhood had been burglarized[citation needed]. With that memory in mind, Bertino created this screenplay[citation needed].
The screenplay is also inspired by the events of the Charles Manson murders[citation needed]. The core of the story is based on the murders that took place in Cabin #28 at Keddie Resort[citation needed], in the remote township of Keddie, CA, where three people were found tied up, stabbed, bludgeoned by a hammer. (A fourth victim who’d been at the site was found some months later, the body dumped 90 miles away.)[1]
The “Manson Murders” is what its based on. Which is about the actress Sharon Tate, a coffee heiress, and Sharons hair stylist, so one guy Charles Manson or Charlie wanted to make another civil war. So he thought that would start one, but it didn’t. Also instead of 1 man killer and 2 woman there was 3 women and I think maybe 1 man. Again also Sharon Tate and them all died by being stabbed over 50 times for most of them, and Sharon was 8 and a half months pregnant.
Anyway the Movie does sound a little made up unless you heard about the “Manson Murders” before saw it. I haven’t seen in but I read a whole entire synopsis thing, it tells you about everything.

It is inspired by true events.
1, It is inspired by “The Keddie Cabin Murders”
2. Loosely of “The Manson Murders”
3. Inspired by something that happened to the director. When he was younger someone knocked on his door asking for someone who didn’t live there. They finally left and later he found out that that the person robbed everyone in the neighborhood who wasn’t home.
It does seem realistic. People do these crazy things everyday, but we don’t hear about most of them. Google the “Manson Murders” then see if that seems “realistic”. It might not, but it still happened.
On another note, the movie was terrible. Very disappointing. I wasted money to see that, wishing I didn’t. The movie started, the theater was packed, the movie ended, less then half were in there.. The others left disappointed and mad. 🙂
Not really…the film’s director has even admitted that it’s not based on real events.
The whole “Based on a True Story” thing has become a way for filmmakers to sell horror movies. By pretending they stories are true, it gets audience members more excited to see the film. But basically, it’s all just a scam to sell tickets.
“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” did this kind of thing first, all the way back in the 1970’s.
I live 7 miles from the Cabin 28 murders and know personally some of the cops that worked that case. I went there a few years ago and the cabin has been demolished.
