there’s a quote from Macbeth that I don’t know the meaning in modern english. Translation please?

I came across a quote from Macbeth that I would like to understand in modern English. Could someone please provide a translation? The quote is: “Methought I heard a voice cry, ‘Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep’—the innocent sleep, sleep that knits up the ravell'd sleave of care.”

The first line has multiple meanings (trust Shakespeare to do that!) Macbeth is describing here to his wife what he heard “a voice” cry out.

“Sleep no more! Macbeth doth murder sleep!”

The voice is telling, perhaps, the world to no longer sleep because it is unsafe– Macbeth is murdering King Duncan while he is sleeping.

The voice is also foreshadowing/telling Macbeth that he will not be able to sleep in the future. He is murdering his own sleep, through the impending guilt.

The next line is personifying “care,” asking us to image a shirt that is being knitted(/created) by sleep. Sleep being a symbol of comfort, of safety.

Sleep in macbeth is like a symbol for peace of mind, and sanity; when lady macbeth goes insane she can’t sleep.

‘The innocent sleep’ reiterates this.

I think this quote is actually referring to when Macbeth is accused of murder? When they say “sleep no more!” i think it was a cry for everyone to wake up and get out of bed.

All of this is off the top of my head, i’m not totally positive about my answer. but its 4am and I cant sleep. Ironic, no?

hahaaha gooooood luck
