unbalanced forces question?
A mother exerts a force (F) on her child in a moving elevator. If the child has a mass of 19.9 kg, calculate the magnitude of the force the mother exerts on the child under the following conditions:
(b) The elevator accelerates upward at 0.866 m/s².
(c) The elevator moves upward at a constant speed.
(d) The upward-moving elevator decelerates at 2.05 m/s².

When the elevator is accelerating upward, the upward force is mg + ma. It supports the weight mg and gives it an additional thrust ma.
When the elevator is accelerating downward, the upward force is mg - ma.
When the acceleration is 0, what do you think happens to the ma term?
