Anything by Pearl Jam. Such depth and passion in his lyrics, but enough vagueness so that you can interpret what he writes however you want. Some of my favorite songs with personal interpretations:Better Man – About a woman with low self-esteem who settles for a man who doesn’t appreciate her or deserve her, yet she stays with him and lies about loving him because she thinks she needs him.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4BObpNQqNo&ob=av2n Dissident – About a woman who tried to help a desperate man (and possibly a man on the run from authorities…”escape is never the safest path”), but then has a change of heart and turns him in instead (“sold him to the state”). Then she has to live with the guilt of being afraid to help give this man’s life meaning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbWZ8In9Ois Daughter – This is about a little girl who is abused because she’s not good enough in her parents’ eyes. Child abuse is unfortunately a very prevalent focus in many psychiatric settings. Most people with axis II personality disorders (such as borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, etc), have experienced childhood maltreatment of some sort.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiqgTPmkfek Alive – I’m pretty sure this is a personal song for Vedder. Vedder was raised by his stepfather (who he had a strained relationship with), and didn’t learn that his stepfather wasn’t his real father until his real father was dead. The song is about a boy who finds out that his real father is not the father that raised him. His real father is dead, and he has to wonder if he deserves to be alive for not knowing the truth before, so he could remedy things with his real dad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGiTPgvKktM Jeremy – This song is about abuse, neglect, and suicide. It’s about a little boy full of hope and dreams, that gets emotionally abused at school and neglected at home. He ends up hurting others out of resentment and ultimately killing himself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS91knuzoOA&ob=av2e Black – One of my favorites. It’s about depression after the loss of his long-term relationship with a woman. He taught her everything, she gave him everything, but now it’s over, and he’s desperate and overcome with grief. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs-XZ_dN4HcEven Flow – About a neglected, homeless, and mentally ill man who lives on the streets. He’s very dissociative, possibly even schizophrenic (“whispering hands, gently lead him away”). In his better moments he tells himself he’ll start his life again, but the cognitive distortions he has outweigh his momentary will, and he can’t (“thoughts arrive like butterflies, he don’t know, so he chases them away”). He can’t find his even flow. He can find a psychological and literal balance.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxKWTzr-k6s&ob=av2e...
