What degrees should I major in to become a lawyer?

What degrees should I pursue to become a lawyer? Specifically, which majors are most beneficial for pre-law students in university?

It doesn’t really matter what you major in. Popular choices are history, political science, business (wide variety here), engineering, english. The important part is to pick a major that is useful to you. Majoring in basket-weaving won’t impress any admission committee. God forbid you get a Bachelors and then decide you don’t want to be a lawyer.

Also, if you pick a major you are interested in, then your grades will generally be higher. As for the suggestion of Criminal Justice, it would demonstrate an interest in being a criminal lawyer but nothing else. Very few law students actually pursue criminal law as career.

You can get to law school from many majors. At one time political science was THE route to go. Now you can major in just about anything. Pick a major that will allow you to be most successful grades wise. Business is a very good one. What type lawyer do you want to be? That also will help you make the decision of a major.

Best of luck to you.

Do what you are obscenely good at and can get high grades in. More than anything, law schools want the top students in their field. You can actually graduate with any major as long as you come out of it skilling in reading comprehension and writing.

I would actually NOT recommend Criminal Justice (which is a professional program for future Police officers) but something more analytical or reading intensive, like: Literature, Classics, Math, Political Science, Economics.

Law schools love to have diversity in their programs. So, whatever you’re good at, do it. And try to graduate with honors.

In order to become a lawyer, you need a bachelor’s degree in something, and then you need to go to law school. So what your concern now has to be is what do you need in order to get into law school.

Most law schools want you to major in something that will give you lots of practice in reading large quantities of material and in writing. Political science is the traditional pre-law major, but it isn’t necessary to major in poli sci in order to get in.

Another thing you should think about is what happens if you change your mind about law school while you are in college? You will want a major that will allow you to be employed even if you decide not to go to law school, of if it takes you a year or two to get into law school upon graduation.

My understanding is that law schools will take people with any undergraduate degree, since there are so many branches of the law. You might consider the type of law that interests you: tax, family, contract, criminal? Then, major in that field, so you have the background appropriate for the field of law you want to practice.
