What did the Kansas-Nebraska act do?

I learned about the Kansas-Nebraska Act in my American History class, but I’ve forgotten the details and would like to refresh my memory. I’ve already tried searching on ask.com and WikiAnswers, but I didn’t find the information I was looking for. Additionally, I have a question on my take-home exam related to the Kansas-Nebraska Act. I don’t want to cheat by asking for the exact exam question, but I would really appreciate a clear explanation of what the Kansas-Nebraska Act entailed. Thank you so much for your help!

The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and opened new lands for settlement, and allowed the settlers to decide (popular sovereignty) whether or not to have slavery.

It is true that it created Kansas and Nebraska, but it has a greater significance: It repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820, and allowed settlers in those territories to determine if they would allow slavery within their boundaries. The act was proposed by Stephen A. Douglas. He hoped it would ease tensions between the North and the South. The Republican Party was created in opposition to this act. As you probably know, this led to much trouble in Kansas with both pro-slavery and antislavery groups moving there to affect the “slavery or no slavery” question. The uprisings in Kansas gave it the nickname of Bleeding Kansas.
