What do you call a male seamstress?

I've often wondered what the male equivalent of "seamstress" is. The term "sewer" seems too informal, and "seamster" also feels somewhat inadequate. Since "seamstress" is specifically feminine and considering that, stereotypically, the majority of individuals who sew are women, it appears there may never have been an official male counterpart to the term. If such a term exists, could anyone please share it?

Hey people, a tailor is someone who makes clothes specifically for people, fitted directly for them. Seamsters / seamstresses aren’t all necessarily tailors, while all tailors are seamsters / seamstresses.

I've always wondered this, as "sewer" sounds informal and "seamster", the same. Since "seamstress" is already feminine, and the majority of people who sew are female (I'm just going by stereotype), there was probably never an official male counterpart to the…

The correct answer to what a man who sews is of course “seamster”. But the term is rarely used because the clothing industry was and is dominated by women and most men who work in the clothing industry today usually fall into the categories of “tailor” or “designer” (which can obviously refer to a woman as well). But regardless of how infrequently the term is used it does in fact pre-date the term “seamstress”. It has to because the replacement of the masculine suffix “-ster” with the feminine suffix “-stress” can only occur if the masculine form of the word already exists. The word “seamster” comes from Middle English, had it origins in Old English, and came in to use sometime before 1000AD.

Technically, I think it would be “seamster.”
