What do you think of ‘MTV’s 22 Greatest Voices in Music History’?
What are your thoughts on MTV's list of "22 Greatest Voices in Music History"? The list includes:
- Mariah Carey
- Freddie Mercury
- Whitney Houston
- Bono
- Christina Aguilera
- Alanis Morissette
- Kurt Cobain
- Björk
- Celine Dion
- Tupac Shakur
- Michael Jackson
- Chris Cornell
- Eminem
- David Bowie
- Alicia Keys
- Steven Tyler
- Jewel
- Thom Yorke
- Mary J. Blige
- Michael Stipe
- Sade
- Bruce Springsteen
I find this list to be quite disappointing and obscure. It’s unclear whether the rankings are based on vocal ability, but if they are, they certainly miss the mark. I'm astonished by how such a list could be compiled, especially considering MTV's influence on music. What do you think?

I agree...this list is the pits. Whoever wrote it has a tin ear and should never be allowed near music again. They have the taste of a.toilet bowl brush. C'mon..22 greatest voices in music history??!! There's only one name that might have a chance of making my list..possibly Freddie Mercury, but this would depend on how many better "voices" I could come up with.

One thing some people are forgetting is this is in the last 25 years guys, if this was of all time, we'd all be laughing our asses off. This list pissed me off from the get go by having rappers on here. This is VOICES therefore no rappers. Rapping is not singing. two completely different styles. I do admire Mariah but her at number one is a long shot for me. I think she's a little overrated as a singer simply because of her 5 octaves. Big ranges doesn't always mean great singers. I would personally put Whitney at the top. Her range wasn't as big as Mariah's but her power and technique will always put Mariah to shame. Overall, this list is ****. The only ones worth keeping are MJ, Whitney, Mariah, Celine , & Freddie. Some others like Alicia and Mary J. are awsm but not THAT awsm. The others are not even worth the typing.

What constitutes a great voice? The title led me to think it was based on how good their voice is...I could understand the rappers if it was based on vocal ability, but really, Kurt Cobain? Jewel? Thom Yorke?
There are like a hundred of those "MTV's # Greatest" playing every day. And every one has different contenders. S'hard to keep up.
This list is a joke. How can Aretha Franklin not be there. Prince.Paul McCartney.Luther Vandross. The Eagles. Sam Cooke,Otis Redding. etc.
I love Nirvana and Cobains voice was great to coincide with his lyrics and the music of the band but his is not top of all time. Eminem? Please!David Bowie great artist and yes he can sing but should not be considered of the greats
Where's Sinatra? The first three I agree with. same with Cornell, Christina,Michael
But Bjork,Alanis,Bono,Tyler? Again great artist and yes they all can sing but as far as top all time? Don't think so. The first 10 should be dominated by old soul singers. If you want to talk about range Robert Plant would have to be up there even if you don't like his tonality
There are actually several people who deserve to be on the list, and I don't know some of the others. I can't really say much.
btw: why wouldn't Mariah be #1??
this is pretty funny. kurt cobain in the top 10 hahahaha but i love nirvana. chris cornell oughta be higher. and in my opinion bruce springsteens voice is just annoying. o and eminem???????? this is clearly not based on singing ability because there are rappers on it. i don't think i've ever seen a good list of rock performers or just performers in general. its usually all about popularity
I have to say I am quite pleased that Mariah Carey is at #1 because she is my favorite singer. The rest of the list is atrocious, though. I am really picky when it comes to singers/vocalists, so I wouldn't like anyone else's list anyway. No Stevie Wonder? Now that is offensive. Paul Rodgers is a favorite of mine as well.
Breaking it down.
1. Mariah Carey - Great
2. Freddie Mercury - Overrated operatic bore
3. Whitney Houston - Eh, I think she's pretty overrated
4. Bono - Puhlease
5. Christina Aguilera - Obnoxious, overrated
6. Alanis Morissette - HA
7. Kurt Cobain - Just no (and I like Nirvana)
8. Bjork - I'll admit, I don't think I've heard her sing
9. Celine Dion - Obnoxious, not fond of her personally
10. Tupac Shakur - Wow
11. Michael Jackson - Gross
12. Chris Cornell - Whatev, not too big on him as a vocalist or otherwise
13. Eminem - Ol' whiney? Too funny
14. David Bowie - Not fond of him
15. Alicia Keys - Boring
16. Steven Tyler - Gross
17. Jewel - Now that's funny
18. Thom Yorke - Not fond of him
19. Mary J. Blige - Gross
20. Michael Stipe - Gross
21. Sade - I don't know about her either
22. Bruce Springteen - Ha
