Is a jalapeno a fruit or a vegetable?
Is a jalapeño considered a fruit or a vegetable? Additionally, could you explain the rationale behind its classification?

The Jalapeno is a type of Pepper which is considered a Capsicum.
Capsicum is a genus of plants from the nightshade family (Solanaceae).
Scientifically, capsiucum plants make fruit. In botany, a fruit is the ripened ovary—together with seeds—of a flowering plant.
The term Vegetable is a highly contested term and is only used in cooking and culinary. You should never hear a scientist say “vegetable”.
So, to answer your question, a Jalapeno is a fruit scientifically and a vegetable to the rest of the world.

That’s a great question… All I know is: They taste~delicious~ They are a Vegetable (I think), but then the Tomato blew my theory of vegetables right out the window ? and they are HOT as Hellooooo! I guess it depends which book you read… Anything I eat I always consider it as a “FRUIT of THE EARTH” anyway! So enjoy those Jalapenos and have a Blessed Day!
why does it have to be either haha. cant the jalapeno be content that it’s part of it’s own plant family?
I think that to classify the jalapeno as being a part of the fruit or vegetable families kinda demystifies it, and makes it seem less awesome. the jalapeno is an amazingly tasty and exotic addition to any dish, and it should be held in great esteem.
it’s part of an awesome family of plants that can never be otherwise classified, with the length at which this topic has been discussed, with no apparent answer, as evidence.

A jalapeno is a pepper. Commonly, peppers are thought of as vegetables but technically they are fruits.
According to the Random House dictionary:
Fruit: the developed ovary of a seed plant with its contents and accessory parts, as the pea pod, nut, tomato, or pineapple.
Vegetable: any plant whose fruit, seeds, roots, tubers, bulbs, stems, leaves, or flower parts are used as food, as the tomato, bean, beet, potato, onion, asparagus, spinach, or cauliflower.
The answer to your question, technically is both.
A vegetable is any part of a plant that you eat. Since the jalapeno is part of a plant, and you eat it, it is a vegetable.
However, it is also a fruit, because it is developed from the ovary (flower) of the plant and contains the seeds.
Fruit is a scientific term, whereas vegetable is a culinary term.
In the 1800’s, the U.S. Supreme court made a ruling that things such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and the like are vegetables.
This ruling is useless though, as any part of the plant that we eat is a vegetable.
Technically it is a fruit. However, western civilization would consider it a vegetable. Remember, if it has seeds, it is a fruit.
It is a fruit.
The scientific definition of a fruit is any structure that develops from a fertilized ovary and contains seeds of the plant. …
A vegetable is defined as “a plant cultivated for an edible part, such as the root of the beet, the leaf of spinach, or the flower buds of broccoli or cauliflower”
