Is it okay to eat expired Slim Jim?

Is it safe to eat expired Slim Jims?

I recently bought a large box of the small snack-sized Slim Jims from Costco, and I noticed they are past their expiration date, which is July 1, 2010. Today is February 21, 2025. They still taste fine, and I’ve heard that the high salt content helps preserve the meat. Should I be concerned about eating them, or are they still good to consume?

thats not a expiration date, its a freshness date, for the companies to move old product

things like slim jims have a lot of preservatives and are generally not going to go bad if kept in its packaging... it could have a date showing 5 years ago and would still be safe to eat... just might not taste as good.

It's fine, we're only talking about a few days more. For food that doesn't need refrigeration, those "best by" or expiration dates are really only the date after which the food may not taste or look quite as good as it did before. As long as it looks OK and tastes OK, it should be fine to eat.

No guarantees on this answer but the following information might help.

From past experience with the pharmaceutical industry and an acquaintance with the FDA, the expiration date on products is generally stamped as a "best by date". Products can be just fine to consume after that date for a short while, depending on their total shelf life.

They begin to lose their effectiveness, flavor, nutritional value and so on after that date. Some are much quicker than others.

Depending on the product, some can make you mildly ill, moderately ill or severely ill even up to the point of helping you to reach your own expiration date.

I tend to be very cautious about those dates and might go slightly past them on occasion, but generally pitch it out.
